Event Details

In our world today, corporate activities have an impact on all types of societal concerns and issues not to mention global warming. It is no longer possible to conduct corporate engagement without being aware of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

At the same time, in the art world, the use of art as a means of expression to arouse people's interest in social issues is seen with the emergence of socially engaged art, rather than simply being used by artists as a means of self-expression.

Art is also beginning to embrace and tackle directly on ESG and SDG issues. For example, last April – May, the Kitakyushu Future Creation Art Festival "ART for SDGs" was held in the Higashida area of Kitakyushu City with the theme of how the SDGs can be expressed through art. The director of the festival was Fumio Nanjo (Curator, Former Director, and Current Special Advisor to the Mori Art Museum), and Yoichi Ochiai (Media Artist, Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba) participated with a video work using the latest technology under the keyword digital nature. Sputniko! (Artist, Associate Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts) is actively involved in the SDGs from an artist's perspective, promoting the project "WDGs ~Women Development Goals~," which disseminates information and messages related to the SDGs by women, centered on the realization of gender equality as stated in the SDGs.

In this way, we are now seeing an overlap between ESG and SDG activities undertaken by corporations and social issues addressed from the perspective of art. Recent corporate support for art and artists has moved beyond the once-mainstream activities in which companies support cultural and artistic activities and CSR activities that help companies fulfill certain social responsibilities. It is moving toward cooperation and the art world to solve social issues.

In this symposium, we will welcome Fumio Nanjo, Yoichi Ochiai, and Sputniko!, all of whom not only have a broad perspective in the arts but also are globally active with strong ties to the business community. Our discussions will revolve around the relationship between ESG and SDGs and art, taking into account the new trend in corporate management towards solving social concerns and issues.

Reception will follow for networking.
