15) "The U.S.-Japan Alliance: Built to Last?" ASPI and I-House Geoeconomics Institute Policy Program
Danny RusselWendy CutlerKazuto SuzukiYuichi HosoyaTakako Hikotani

Venue: Iwasaki Koyata Memorial Hall

Format: Panel discussion

In the lead up to Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to Washington, join us for timely discussion of the current state of U.S.-Japan relations. Officials on both sides have described the alliance as stronger than ever before. The allies’ views have converged on the need for enhanced economic security and resilient supply chains, the need to update the military alliance to be more interoperable and flexible, and the necessity of strengthening an inclusive, rules-based order.

However, with both Kishida and Biden’s political futures uncertain, how durable is this alignment? Can the two leaders reconcile the alliance agenda with domestic politics to ensure the progress made in recent years is sustainable?

ASPI Vice Presidents Wendy Cutler and Danny Russel will be joined by International House Japan & Asia Pacific Initiative’s Dr. Kazuto Suzuki, Director, Institute of Geoeconomics and Dr. Yuichi Hosoya, Research Director, to present their views on Washington and Tokyo’s shared agendas and the challenges ahead for the relationship in a moderated discussion led by Asia Society Japan and Asia Society Policy Institute’s Senior Fellow, Dr. Takako Hikotani
